POES VOLCANO, COSTA RICA.
Volcan Poes is a Stratovolcano containing 3 craters. The volcan stands 2708m and is situated close to the capital San Jose near the south eastern end on the central AmericanArc, above the Cocos-Caribbean plates.
Poes has one of the largest craters in the world,and is surrounded by forest.
The summit has 2 crater lakes, the southernmost 'Botos' is cold and clear and last erupted 7,500 years ago. The other is warm and acid and at 40C continues to vent steam and sulphur. It has many phreatic and phretomagnetic eruptions since first recorded in 1828. These eruptions are in the form of geyser like ejections of water from the lake.
