TROMVIK, NORWAY 9 JANUARY 2023
This was the first night of our aurora hunting trip and it would eventually prove to be very spectacular.
We headed NW out of our base in Tromso to a location just outside the town of Tromvik.
The site was privately owned but we were given permission to use the dark location for our aurora viewing.
We arrived there just after 19.00, there was no aurora visible at that time despite the clear skies and decent potential for the evening. Looking at the data it showed a northerly flow so we would have to be patient.
Despite the extremely cold condition, the location had a hut and camp fire to keep us warm as we waited.
Eventually the flow became southerly and the aurora became visible at 23.30, and it began to increase in intensity as bands of green stretched out over the sky which began to swirl overhead,
This continued for about an hour, before we left to head back to Tromso. We arrived back around 1.30am, allowing us little sleep before the next adventure whale watching the following day.
