HANTS, UK 10 MAY 2024

There had been so many CME's and M class flares for the past few days that it was expected that there would be a strong auroral display when they impacted the atmosphere.
The planetary Index was predicted to be KP8 with a -33.6nt Southerly flow. I believe the KP value actually reached 11 at one point!
The aurora was predicted to arrive with so much potential it would likely be visible from all areas of the UK that had clear skies.

I decided to head out after dark with the intention of finding a spot that had a clear view of the northern horizon but to my surprise the aurora was visible directly overhead.
I set up in the local green in Yateley, N Hants and the activity began to increase and reds and green curtains began to trail all over to the sky.
I photographed some of the most amazing aurora that I had ever seen for about 2 hours until the activity began to decrease.

This was the strongest display for over 20 years and was clearly visible over Europe, North America and the Polar regions obviously.
The Southern Hemisphere was treated to the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) as far north as Queensland in Australia.
This is a night that anyone that witnessed this magical spectacle will never forget.
